The Truth About Weight Loss U.S. News & World Report, June 16, 2003, Amanda Spake. This cover story looks into the science of slimming. "Trimming the national waistline requires a shift in thinking. Gone are the days when weight control was instinctual, when food was scarce and we had to be active just to survive."

Two Studies Indicate Atkins Diet May Improve Heart Health New York Times, May 22, 2003, By Mary Duenwald with Denise Grady. The New England Journal of Medicine, showed that although the low-carbohydrate diets were, at best, just marginally more effective for weight loss, they were associated with lower triglycerides, blood fats that can contribute to atherosclerosis, the buildup of plaque in the arteries. One group of dieters lost 16 pounds after a year. That was greater than the average 8-pound loss among the low-fat dieters. In another study, the low-carbohydrate dieters lost an average of 13 pounds. The low-fat dieters lost four. (see New York Times and The New England Journal of Medicine)
