Spam
Hey Spam lovers! Guess what? Spam has no carbs! That’s right, Spam is mostly pork shoulder and ham (with secret spices, according to Hormel). And everyone knows Hawaii consumes more Spam per capita than any other state. So is Spam okay for a HPLC diet? Well, yes and no. Yes, because it has no carbs and good amount of protein (7 grams per 2 ozs. (about two slices)). And no, because it does have some things like sodium nitrite, which may not be all that healthy for you. Bottom line, it’s okay for an HPLC diet in moderation. It definitely won’t affect your insulin levels, but there are better quality sources of protein out there. Don’t get me wrong; I personally love some Spam and eggs, just not everyday.

Some interesting Spam facts:

  • Spam began in 1937 (some 65 years ago!)

  • Hormel holds a Spam Jam featuring its best-known product, Spam. They give away a grand prize to where else? The Spam capital of the world, Hawaii.

  • In Austin, MN, there is a 16,500 square foot museum dedicated to Spam.

  • During WWII, more than a 100 million pounds of Spam was served to the troops. That's alot of Spam burgers!
